• Cafayate is 3 hours south; Purmamarca about 2.5 hours north.

• Altitude is real north of Salta; take the first day slowly at 2,500m and above.
• Fuel stations are sparse on Ruta 40 between Cachi and Cafayate.
• Nights are cold year-round at altitude even when afternoons are hot.
• Some rural roads are ripio (gravel) — check your rental agreement covers them.
