Bariloche: Cabins, Lakes and Mountain Escapes

6 min read · Updated

Quick answer

How do you choose a Bariloche cabin?

Pick your cabin by kilometre marker on Avenida Bustillo: km 0–8 keeps you near town, km 8–20 balances views and access, and beyond km 20 is quieter but needs a car for everything. Confirm heating type and whether the lake access is private or shared.

In Bariloche, the address is the amenity. Almost every rental decision comes down to where along the lakeshore road you land and how you plan to move around.

Understanding the kilometers

Avenida Bustillo runs west from town along Lago Nahuel Huapi, and properties are described by their kilometer marker. Km 0–8 is suburban and convenient. Km 8–18 is the sweet spot for lake views with shops nearby. Beyond Km 20, near Llao Llao, you get the finest scenery and the longest drives.

What to check before booking a cabaña

Cabins vary enormously in comfort, particularly outside summer.

  • Heating type — central heating is easier than a wood stove alone in July
  • Whether the lake view is direct or across the road
  • Parking and winter road access on steep driveways
  • Distance to the nearest supermarket, which can be 15km

Ski season versus summer

For skiing, staying near Cerro Catedral saves a daily 20km drive in snow conditions. For summer, the lakeshore wins — swimming, kayaking and evening light over the water are the point.

Beyond Bariloche

Villa La Angostura is an hour north and quieter, and San Martín de los Andes sits at the far end of the Route of the Seven Lakes. Both make excellent second bases if you have a week or more.
