The Best Time to Visit Patagonia

7 min read · Updated

Quick answer

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

December through February gives the longest days, warmest weather and full trail and boat access, at peak prices. October–November and March–April are the sweet spot for fewer crowds and lower rates. Winter suits skiing around Bariloche but closes much of the far south.

Patagonia's season is short and its weather is famously unstable. The question is less about finding good weather than about deciding which trade-off suits your trip: daylight, crowds, price or access.

December to February: high summer

Daylight stretches past 10pm, every trail and service is open, and temperatures in the mountains sit comfortably in the mid-teens Celsius. This is also when the wind is strongest, when El Chaltén's trails are busiest and when rentals cost the most.

November and March to April: the shoulder

For most travelers this is the better window. Crowds drop sharply, prices soften, and April in particular delivers the lenga forests turning red across the lake district and El Chaltén. Days are shorter and some services scale back, so confirm heating and opening hours before you book.

June to September: winter

Mountain Patagonia largely closes, but two things open up. Cerro Catedral and Cerro Castor run their ski seasons, and on the Atlantic coast southern right whales gather off the Valdés Peninsula from June through December.

Practical planning notes

Patagonia is a region of long distances, so build in buffer days for weather and drives.

  • Book El Chaltén rentals for January and February several months ahead
  • Expect wind year-round — it defines the climate more than temperature does
  • Shoulder-season rentals are the single easiest way to reduce trip cost
  • Check whether roads on Ruta 40 are paved on your intended route
