Bariloche at a glance

Bariloche sits on the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi with the Andes rising directly behind it. It is Argentina's most established mountain destination and, unsurprisingly, its deepest market for cabañas.

The town itself is functional rather than pretty. The rentals worth traveling for are strung west along the Circuito Chico, where each kilometer buys more water frontage and fewer neighbors.

Where to stay in Bariloche

Kilometers 8 to 25 of Avenida Bustillo are the heart of the cabin market — close enough to town for supplies, far enough for quiet and lake views. Cerro Catedral suits ski trips. Villa La Angostura, an hour north, is the calmer and more polished alternative.

Getting there

  • Bariloche airport (BRC) connects to Buenos Aires in about 2h15 and to other Patagonian hubs.
  • Buses from Buenos Aires take 20+ hours; from Neuquén around 6.
  • A car is close to essential for lakeshore rentals; Bustillo bus service exists but is slow.

Travel tips

  • Confirm the kilometer marker of your cabin — Bustillo runs more than 25km from town.
  • Ask how the property is heated; wood stoves are charming but need managing in winter.
  • Snow chains may be legally required in winter, and rental agencies charge extra for them.
  • Book Christmas, January and the July ski holidays several months in advance.
