Should you visit Patagonia or Salta?
Choose Patagonia between November and March for glaciers, Fitz Roy trekking and lake-district cabins. Choose Salta and the northwest between April and October for red-rock canyons, colonial towns and high-altitude Torrontés wine. The seasons barely overlap, so the right answer is usually decided by your travel dates.

Our verdict
Let the calendar decide. Southern-summer trips belong in Patagonia; shoulder-season and winter trips are far better spent in Salta, where the weather is dry, the driving is short and rentals cost a fraction of Patagonian rates.
