Mountain cabin vs lake house
In the Argentine lake district the two options look alike in photos and behave very differently in practice — mostly because of where they sit.
Quick answer
Should you book a mountain cabin or a lakefront house?
Book a cabaña in the forest for value, winter warmth and quick access to trailheads and ski lifts. Book a lakefront house when the water view and private shoreline are worth roughly a 30 to 60 percent premium and a longer drive to restaurants and services.
Option A
Mountain Cabins
Wood-lined cabañas near trailheads, ski slopes and forest roads.
Best for
- Ski trips
- Hiking
- Value in winter
Option B
Lakefront Houses
Glass-fronted homes with private shoreline and uninterrupted water views.
Best for
- Summer stays
- Families with swimmers
- Photography and slow days
Side by side
| Mountain Cabins | Lakefront Houses | |
|---|---|---|
| Best season | June–September for ski, year-round for hiking | December–March, when the water is usable |
| Typical premium | Baseline | 30–60% above an equivalent cabin inland |
| Location on Bustillo | Km 8–18, closer to town | Km 18–25, further from restaurants |
| Heating | Wood stove plus gas; warm and cheap to run | Larger glazed volumes need real central heating |
| Access in snow | Usually paved to the door | Steep private drives can need chains |
| Noise | Forest quiet | Quiet, though summer shorelines get busy |
Choose Mountain Cabins if…
- You're visiting for ski season or trail access
- You'd rather spend the difference on the trip than the view
- You want short drives to supermarkets and restaurants
Choose Lakefront Houses if…
- You're traveling in summer and will swim or kayak
- The view is the reason you're renting a house at all
- You have a car and don't mind a 20-minute drive to dinner
Our verdict
Winter trips: take the cabin and put the savings into lift passes. Summer trips: the lakefront premium is genuinely worth it, but check the kilometre marker before booking — past Km 25 you'll drive for everything.
